Choosing the Right Camera for Your Project

Three camera types — DSLR, mirrorless, and cinema — displayed on a table
One of the most common questions we get at YMA Studios is "which camera should I use?" The honest answer: it depends entirely on your project.

Entry-level DSLR (Canon EOS, Nikon D series)

**Best for:** Photography, simple video content, social media. **Pros:** Affordable, easy to learn, great image quality for stills. **Cons:** Limited video features, rolling shutter, basic audio inputs. **YMA rate:** ₦15,000–25,000 per day.

Mid-range Mirrorless (Sony A7 series, FX3)

**Best for:** Music videos, documentaries, corporate video, YouTube content. **Pros:** Excellent video specs (4K, 10-bit), compact, good autofocus, professional audio inputs. **Cons:** Battery life, learning curve for video-specific features. **YMA rate:** ₦30,000–50,000 per day.

Cinema Cameras (Blackmagic, RED)

**Best for:** Feature films, high-end commercials, broadcast content. **Pros:** RAW recording, cinema-grade colour science, built for production workflows. **Cons:** Heavy, requires crew, demands more post-production work. **YMA rate:** ₦60,000–120,000 per day.

The Rule of Thumb

If your content will be watched on a phone (social media, YouTube): a mirrorless camera is more than enough. If it will be screened in a cinema or broadcast on TV: consider cinema-grade gear.
